When I first started my MBA project, I thought it would be a simple task. Pick a theme, do some research, write it out and submit. Easy. I had envisioned getting it done in a couple of weeks, and then a few late nights before the date. Reality struck fast. It's not just the creation of a report. It tests your strategy, the ability to persevere and deal with unexpected issues. In my class, almost everyone experienced some sort of difficulty.

A lot of students believe they can handle the assignment as normal homework or as case studies. Weeks later they realize that deadlines are a bit closer than they had hoped The data isn't up to scratch, chapters are not linked and their motivation dwindles. The MBA project could be overwhelming when you don't manage the task correctly.

It is important to have clear objectives before you decide on how to approach data collection, methodology and analysis. If the objectives aren't clear, your project can feel a bit disconnected. I have learned to ask myself what exactly I want in order to determine and how will be able to tell if the project is successful. These questions are a big difference in the efficiency of work.

Collecting and Analysing Data Is Painful

Data collection is where most students struggle. I spent a long time contacting small businesses asking for surveys. Some of them ignored me completely, while some promised me answers, but they were never delivered. The online surveys can be helpful but the answers are often not always complete.

The analysis is yet another problem. You can create perfect charts and tables, but if you can't explain what they mean they are useless. My classmates copied graphs directly without interpretation. Statistics don't mean anything unless you provide them with explanations.

Time Management Is Tough

Everyone knows that time management is important, but for IGNOU MBA it is harder than it sounds. Between group work, lectures and assignments, there's not enough time. The chapters I was putting off thought I could complete them in a few days. However, after a few weeks I was worried.

Breaking the project into small work tasks will help. The project can be divided into literature reviews methodology, data collection and analysis and write chapters one at a time. Monitor your progress weekly in small increments. One chapter or section completed per week will be motivating.

Writing Is Harder Than You Think

Supervisors Can Be Helpful But Also Frustrating

Working with a supervisor is tricky. Some give clear directions and others are incoherent or hard to meet. I waited over two weeks for the response but it took a while to complete my progress.

The most important thing is to be proactive. Plan specific questions, be polite and follow-up with a notepad to record feedback. Supervisors may help but you need the responsibility of your own task.

Formatting and References Matter

I was hesitant to format at first. Fonts, spacing, certificates. I believed I could make them better later. Big mistake. It could have delayed the submission.

References are equally important. One missing citation can raise questions. Utilize tools to manage your references and do it while writing chapters, rather than waiting for the finish. Proper formatting makes your project simple to follow and makes it appear more professional.

Stress Is Real

Stress is inevitable. Deadlines, corrections and insufficient data can be a burden. One night I was staring at the screen feeling like I'd never be finished.

Asking for help does not suggest cheating. It's a good idea to take advantage of the resources available. Students are expected to take advantage of assistance if they're stuck.

Reviewing Your Work
