The Real Struggles MBA Students Face While Completing Their Projects
When I started my MBA project I thought it would be a simple task. Pick a subject, conduct some research, then write it up and submit. Easy. I imagined getting it done in a couple of weeks, and then a few late nights prior to the date. The reality hit quickly. The task isn't just writing a document. It tests your preparation, endurance and ability to deal with unexpected issues. In my class, almost everyone suffered in a way.
Many students assume they can handle the assignment as normal essays or research. After a few weeks, they realize that deadlines are not as close as they'd hoped The data isn't up to scratch, chapters don't line up as they should, and motivation dwindles. The MBA project could become overwhelming should you not manage it appropriately.
Here, I'll discuss the most common challenges students face and ways to deal with these. There is no one-size-fits-all solution however, gaining knowledge from experience helps a lot.
Choosing a Topic Is Harder Than It Looks
Selecting a topic can seem easy but it is not. I made the error of picking a topic that sounded impressive but was impossible to achieve. The weeks passed by while I attempted to collect data from companies that had never contacted me. Some of my classmates chose trendy subjects without even considering the availability of data. The result is identical. The result is that you waste time and are exhausted.
An approachable topic is much better than a dazzling one. It should correspond to your resources and your interest. For instance, instead of "The Future of Marketing in India" choose "Social Media Marketing Strategies in Local Retail Stores." The focus is on data, it is much easier to collect, as well as the goals are clearly stated.
Objectives Are More Important Than You Think
Objectives define your project. Some students will make the error of writing vague goals such as "To study the impact of leadership on productivity." This says nothing. My own objectives had to be revised multiple times in order to make them tangible and lucid.
Clare objectives can help you choose how to approach data collection, methodology and analysis. If your objectives are not clear enough, your project may feel unconnected. I've learned how to ask myself the questions I need to measure and how I can be sure if I'm succeeding. These types of questions make an enormous difference in the performance of your work.
Collecting and Analysing Data Is Painful
Data collection is where the majority of students struggle. I spent days calling small businesses for surveys. Some ignored me completely, while others promised to answer questions that did not arrive. These surveys are helpful, but the responses tend to be insufficient.

Analysis is an additional challenge. One can have perfect charts and tables, but if you cannot explain what they mean, they're unusable. Students copied graphs directly without interpretation. These numbers do not support anything unless you present them.
One tip is to conduct your survey with a handful of individuals before. This can help identify difficult questions and prevents you from wasting time. Always tie your analysis to goals. For example if your project is based on customer satisfaction, be sure your survey is measurable and asks questions on the quality of service provided, product reliability and response time.
Time Management Is Tough
Everyone believes that time management is important, but for MBA it's more difficult than it sounds. Between lectures, group work as well as internships, there's plenty of time. I held off on chapters, thinking I could finish them in a few days. Then, a couple of weeks later, I started to panic.
Breaking the project down into smaller steps can help. Then divide it into literature overview, methodology, data collection and analysis, as well as writing chapters for each. Be sure to record small gains every week. Even one chapter or one section done each week is a good motivator.
Writing Is Harder Than You Think
Even when you have data ready, writing can be challenging. I had a difficult time explaining results in plain language. Some sections felt repetitive. I revised the analysis chapter several times.
Keep the language simple and easy to understand. Invite your friends to read sections. Sometimes, getting caught up in your own work can make it impossible to see the flaws. Fresh eyes help a lot.
Supervisors Can Be Helpful But Also Frustrating
The work of a supervisory is tricky. Some are clear with their instructions however, some are unclear or difficult to follow. It took me 2 weeks to get the response but it took a while to complete my progress.
The key is to be proactive. Plan specific questions, maintain a respectful manner, and record feedback. Supervisors help but you have to be accountable for your own project.
Formatting and References Matter
I ignored formatting at first. Fonts, spacing, certificates. I thought they could be fixed later. Big mistake. It almost delayed submission.

References are equally important. One missing citation can raise questions. Use software to manage the references you have and continue writing chapters instead for the conclusion. A proper format makes your work simpler to comprehend and more professional.
Stress Is Real
Stress is unavoidable. Deadlines for corrections, deadlines and missing data can make it difficult. In the evenings, I sat staring at the computer screen, feeling as if I'd never get it done.
Short breaks help. Making friends with your partner, going for a stroll, listening to music. Recognize small victories. Finishing literature review or completing your data collection is a milestone. They help keep the motivation going.
Ethical Confusion
Many students are confused as to what type of help is permitted. You are able to ask for help but you aren't able to get someone else to write your essay. Ethical guidance may include comments on structure, methodology and clarity. The original work is yours to keep.
Asking for guidance does not be considered cheating. It's smart to make use of the resources available. Teachers will expect students look for assistance when stuck.
Reviewing Your Work
I focused on chapters in isolation initially. Then, I realized the book as a whole contained repetitions or terms that were not consistent and there were no links. Examining the whole IGNOU project in depth reveals areas of confusion. Imagine yourself as an examiner. It will be easier to spot errors that you would have may have missed.
Procrastination Destroys Quality
It is a huge problem. The thought was that I could finish data analysis and writing in a couple of weeks. The plan never came to fruition. Every delay slowed down quality.
Begin early. Even a paragraph or a section every day adds up. The project becomes easily manageable and not overwhelming.
What I Learned
The MBA task isn't a difficult one because of the complexity. It's complicated because students underestimate planning, clarity and direction. We all make mistakes. The key is to learn and keep moving forward.
The ability to organize is beneficial, but flexibility is crucial. Things do not always go as planned. The data might not be there The supervisors will hesitate while obstacles will pop up. The difference is in how your approach to these issues. Break the task into pieces each step, concentrate on a single step at a given time, and have an eye on your expectations.
Projects provide skills that aren't just academic. The discipline of research, time management clear writing and problem solving are skills which can be applied to professional life. The research project can be stressful however, it's also practical.
Closing Thoughts
If you're planning to begin your MBA project pick a topic in which you are able research. Make objectives clear. Set small steps. Get help when you need it. Take breaks. Write in a simple manner. Avoid chasing perfection. Begin on time.
The MBA project does more than simply a report. It tests your patience, planning and problem solving. You'll face challenges. Everyone does. But every challenge teaches you something. In the end the project does not just get submitted. It defines you as researcher, student, and as a professional to come.
