A temporary solution is to click on "Always enable this add-in" when the "A problem was detected with an add-in" message appears. However, this may not always work as some add-ins may still be flagged as "Inactive" even after doing this. Block all unmanaged add-ins, and list of managed add-ins. If none of the above options work, you may want to try repairing or reinstalling your Office installation. This may fix any issues with add-ins or other Outlook functionality. Outlook 2013 and 2016 are less tolerant to long add-in load time compared to earlier Outlook revisions.

Outlook: Disable Outlook COM add-ins

Another symptom is that the Outlook splash screen stops at loading add-ins, and Outlook is automatically closed after that. Alternatively, Outlook may keep on loading add-ins, but never complete the loading process. Exploring this admin page, i see that I'm able to make policies for each o365 app. Have questions or feedback about Office VBA or this documentation? Please see Office VBA support and feedback for guidance about the ways you can receive support and provide feedback. In these cases, the cause of the crash or the loading failure needs to be fixed together with the Outlook data file cannot be accessed add-in owner.

Turn an add-in off for Outlook for Windows

If you're using Outlook 2016, you may see a message that says "A problem was detected with an add-in and it has been disabled" when you start the application. Clicking on the "View Disabled Add-ins... " button shows a form with the list of add-ins and how each one impacts Outlook performance. Sometimes, even if you put the add-in into the "Always enable this add-in" list, it is still flagged as "Inactive" even after restarting Outlook. The user has control over which add-ins run on their computer.

Support for keeping add-ins enabled

To block add-ins that are not managed by this policy setting, you must also configure the Block all unmanaged add-ins policy setting. For Outlook, the registry keys and settings are described in the following tables. While most add-ins will not be disabled by the add-in disabling feature, you don't want your add-in to be disabled consistently.

  • If none of the above options work, you may want to try repairing or reinstalling your Office installation.
  • Programs in Office 2013 and later versions provide add-in resiliency, meaning that apps will disable an add-in if it performs slowly.
  • Block all unmanaged add-ins, and list of managed add-ins.
  • Another symptom is that the Outlook splash screen stops at loading add-ins, and Outlook is automatically closed after that.
  • I would like to know how to disable/remove the plugin for users who already have it installed.
  • Sometimes, even if you put the add-in into the "Always enable this add-in" list, it is still flagged as "Inactive" even after restarting Outlook.

Thank you for your feedback!

On Microsoft teams it seemed easy enough. I just went on the apps page and disabled "allow users to install 3rd party apps," while keeping the Microsoft app installs enabled. I was under the impression that this "let users access third party apps in your tenant" was all encompassing and would disable all 3rd party apps / add-ins for all o365 apps. Compliance reached out to me and said users should only be able to freely install Microsoft owned apps on o365. This applies repair PST file without data loss to teams and outlook and office apps.

Preventing add-ins from being disabled

Programs in Office 2013 and later versions provide add-in resiliency, meaning that apps will disable an add-in if it performs slowly. However, you can re-enable add-ins and prevent add-ins from being auto-disabled by other Office programs. We decided to discontinue the outlook plugin service. I would like Outlook Not Sending or Receiving Email to know how to disable/remove the plugin for users who already have it installed.

Fixing Disabled Add-ins in Outlook 2016

Beginning with Office 2013, system administrators can configure an enhanced level of control for add-ins by using group policy. Well after disabling that setting, now I'm testing further and I noticed that if I open PowerPoint and click add-ins, I'm still freely able to install anything. I'm not using an admin account either. Now when I open teams i can clearly see that 3rd party apps need to be requested but ms apps can be installed without issue.
