At the very end of Bethesda’s E3 press conference last year, Todd Howard wrapped up the presentation with two brief teases for the developer’s next pair of open world RPGs. The first was a brand-new IP set in space known as Starfield, which Howard has since confirmed during a PAX East panel is still very early in development and will not appear during the studio’s briefing this year.
Ghost of Tsushima does share some DNA with Sly Cooper’s stealth sections. Jin can attack enemies outright or stalk them from the shadows and stealthily take them out. While this is out of character for a samurai, Sucker Punch did confirm that the narrative motivates the use of stealth. All of Jin’s samurai allies were killed fighting like samurai. To beat back the Mongols, Jin needs head to the Tsushimalegend site vary up his tactics, even if it goes against everything he knows.
We got to sit down with Sucker Punch Productions to see Ghost of Tsushima up close. Though it was the same demo shown at the conference, we did learn important new details. The game takes place in 1274 during the Mongols’ invasions of the island of Tsushima. You play as Jin Sekai, the last living samurai on the island. Having lost everything to the Mongols, Jin now fights for the common people as he tries to stave off the invasion.
The private demo allowed Sucker Punch to highlight many of the little details that make the game feel real. Mud splashes about when stepped through, wheat parts as you race by and leaves move across the floor realistically as characters fight. It’s all an impressive sight.
This year’s E3 is mere days away, as developers and publishers gear up for an onslaught of reveals, trailers and gameplay demos for a massive lineup of games with enough variety to get gamers of any flavor hyped for the near and far future of releases. Even with a smaller amount of press conferences than usual, E3 2019 is still set to be the biggest week in gaming news this year, but that doesn’t mean every big title is going to get a chance to shine in the spotlight just yet. To set the expectations of fans correctly, developers have recently begun to be more forward as to exactly which previously announced titles will be foregoing the E3 press conferences and show floor for various reasons and below is an up-to-date list on which titles not to expect at E3 2019.

When it comes to accuracy and authenticity, he also claims that the development team "absolutely tried our damnedest." Nate Fox reaffirmed the fact that Sucker Punch is working with experts from Japan things like Kenjutsu , and even consulted developers from Sony's Japanese studios to get a better idea of cultural norms. The second tease at the end of Bethesda’s E3 2018 appearance was for the sixth entry in the developer’s mega-popular fantasy franchise. Much like Starfield, nothing has been shown about Elder Scrolls VI since its reveal and Howard also stated during the aforementioned panel that it would not have a presence at E3 this year, since the title is likely due after the release of Starfield.
There’s no doubt that Sucker Punch Productions is a talented developer having previously delivered two stellar franchises. To see them do something so different and pull it off as well as they have, however, is masterful. Beautiful and deadly, Ghost of Tsushima is shaping up to be a real showcase for the PS4 and the studio. We still have a ways off before the game finally launches, but we’re excited to see what else Ghost of Tsushima has in store for us.
Ever since the release of Batman: Arkham VR in 2016, there has been radio silence regarding the next title from the acclaimed British developer, which will be a step in a new direction away from the dark knight. Apparently, three years is not enough for us to get our first glimpse at their newest project, as Rocksteady Studios co-founder Sefton Hill took to Twitter the week before E3 to confirm that they will not be making their way to LA this year.
